Many of us have grown up consuming media in which characters rarely, if ever, resemble us physically or culturally. This lack of representation can make it challenging to feel seen or connect with characters personally. Identifying with characters is an integral part of the reading and viewing experience. Moreover, individuals from my culture have often been portrayed inaccurately, burdened by harmful stereotypes.

However, it is worth noting that there is now a concern about diversity being included solely to showcase inclusivity, primarily because diversity has become a marketable commodity. Often, when media incorporates many diverse characters, their identities are reduced to mere deviations from the norm, with their entire personalities constructed around these differences. This superficial approach to diversity can be counterproductive and fails to represent the experiences of these individuals authentically. It is essential to move beyond tokenism and ensure that diverse characters are well-rounded and portrayed with depth and authenticity.
