Perception & deception of human beauty & the brain
This resource discusses the idea that natural selection (which pertains that some traits are more appealing and ideal than others) is what originally dictated desires for certain traits/beauty standards. It also discusses human nature’s desires for attractiveness and digs deeper into the inherent root of human perception and value of beauty in a scientific lens. This is honestly a very interesting read and an excellent guide to understanding the development of biases towards specific features and really explains how our society has evolved in terms of beauty standards today.
Beauty Perception: A historical and contemporary review
This article explores the concept of beauty across cultures and throughout history, emphasizing the inherent human ability to distinguish attractive physical features such as facial averageness, symmetry, and youthfulness. I loved this as it truly delved into the beauty standards for different racial and ethnic groups and the impact of social media influences in shaping those perceptions of beauty in the modern era.
Oriental Theory
This text focuses on the transformation of beauty standards in India, examining the preference for medium-skinned complexions and the impact of colonialism. I think this is a very significant read as it thoroughly discusses Western values such as the belief that “white is beautiful” and that it is the Westerner’s duty to “humanize” these societies. The conclusion highlights the ongoing challenges of decolonizing beauty standards in our society now and I think that is a really helpful aspect of this article!
